Damian Schwartz a grandi à Madrid, et la musique a toujours fait partie de sa vie. Véritable référence sur la scène espagnole, il sort son premier disque en 2004, et crée le label AHD peu de temps après. À quelques jours de sa venue à Montpellier, Damian nous accorde une interview exclusive (merci à RTB !).
Parle-nous de tes débuts avec la musique.
Je suis dans la musique depuis longtemps maintenant, depuis le début de mon enfance, c’était une chose très importante chez moi. J’ai toujours voulu y participer, d’une façon ou d’une autre. Tout a commencé dès mes premiers cours de batterie. Un des amis de mon frère, issu de son groupe, m’a offert une batterie complète (mon frère jouait de la guitare). J’ai pu donc jouer avec mes amis, on faisait des reprises, des choses comme ça. Puis après, j’ai choisi la guitare basse, que je continue aujourd’hui.
Et la musique électronique ?
En parallèle, dès mes 16 ans, j’ai commencé à sortir dans des clubs, et c’est là que j’ai connu la house, la techno, et vous pouvez deviner comment ça a fini…
Comment se sont passées tes premières rencontres avec des labels ?
J’ai eu beaucoup de chance avec ça. J’achetais ma musique à l’époque à la boutique d’Alex Under, à Madrid. C’est devenu un bon ami, il avait un studio dans la cave du magasin, je lui ai donc fait écouter mes tracks. J’ai commencé à produire très vite, avec beaucoup de soutien autour de moi. Je pense que j’ai évolué et appris quand je diffusais mes tracks un peu partout.
Et dans les premiers clubs ?
Tout provenait de mes productions à moi, je n’ai jamais été un DJ résident de ma ville ou quelque chose comme ça. J’ai fait bien sûr des fêtes avec des amis, mais rien de sérieux pour être résident. Je suis allé ailleurs, à cause de la musique que je faisais. On peut dire que la première vraie date que j’ai faite était au Watergate en 2005, et c’était bien cool.
Que veux-tu nous raconter à travers ta musique ?
C’est difficile à dire, il est important pour moi de sentir la personnalité que je vais mettre, et j’ai vraiment besoin de sentir que chaque track que je fais a quelque chose de ma personnalité, et c’est parfois très difficile à réaliser. Mon disque dur est plein de tracks qui sonnent vide ou qui me paraissent anodines, qui pourraient être efficaces sur un dancefloor, mais je ne pourrais pas les passer, car j’ai besoin de sentir les miennes, propres à moi-même. Mais pour vous dire ce que je veux exprimer, ce n’est pas facile, c’est plus comme un sentiment ou un état d’esprit, et cela dépend vraiment de chaque moment que je vis. Je crois que là je viens de sortir tout que je veux exprimer en ce moment particulier, et je suis vraiment confiant sur mes compétences dans la musique et mes connaissances, je suis très heureux de la façon dont je compose, que j’ai développé au fil des années. C’est une tâche qui m’encourage, m’apprend et me fait évoluer sur de nouvelles choses tous les jours. C’est vraiment le truc le plus important dans ma vie, ou du moins que j’apprécie le plus.
Quelles sont les influences principales de ta musique ?
J’en ai beaucoup ! J’aime beaucoup Miles Davis, mais dernièrement je sens que Coltrane a une plus grande influence en moi, il a complètement mis sa technique au service de ses sentiments. J’aime aussi beaucoup Gemini, Autechre, The Motown, Sly, Mika Vainio, Bobby Konders, Juan Atkins… Ce mouvement old school me manque.
Est-ce que tu aimerais travailler avec un artiste en particulier ?
Non, pas pour l’instant, je ne l’imagine pas. Et puis c’est compliqué pour deux artistes d’être en accord sur leurs envies personnelles, et leurs propres idées.
Quelle sortie t’a marquée depuis ce début d’année ?
« Transformacion », (sur mon label AHD) d’un grand ami, DJ F, ce qu’il a fait est incroyable. Une track de Joey Anderson sur Deconstruct est aussi très bonne. En 2012, de nombreux labels incroyables ont aussi fait des trucs géniaux.
Quels sont tes projets à venir ?
Il y a un autre EP qui va sortir sur mon label AHD très bientôt, juste après la track de Fred P à paraître dans un mois environ. Autre chose est censée paraître chez Lovemonk cette semaine. Enfin, je travaille sur beaucoup de nouvelles choses, mais je dois encore trouver un bon endroit pour le faire. Je pense aussi à produire pour Oslo Records.
Parle-nous de ton studio, on a envie de savoir !
Le centre du studio est ma table de mixage, une Soundtracs Solo Logic, qui rassemble tout mon équipement, l’analogique et l’ordinateur, je rassemble les pistes et j’utilise l’ordinateur comme un hardware. J’ai une MPC pour mes drums et mes samples, une TR-808, une Waldorf Microwave (celle avec le filtre analogique), un échantillonneur Emax, un Roland JX8P, un xoxbox que j’ai construit moi-même, un Sony DPS, un Mac Pro avec cubase (Numerology et Omnisphere sont les seuls synthétiseurs virtuels que j’utilise). J’ai un magnétophone Telefunken M15A, et je vais acheter un Elektron analogique dès que je pourrais. Le tout sort sur des haut-parleurs PMC (trop grands peut-être) et je crois que c’est tout ! Et aussi un drum sequencer de MFB, ils sont très bons (avec l’affichage à LED bleu) !
Quels sont les 3 clubs dans lesquels tu aimerais jouer (si ce n’est déjà fait) ?
Il y en a beaucoup ! J’ai eu la chance de jouer dans beaucoup d’endroits cool. Il y en a certains dans lesquels j’adorerais aller, j’ai entendu de bonnes choses sur la Concrete. Et j’aimerais bien revenir au R. Johnson, ça fait longtemps…

First let’s talk about you, How did you get started with music? And how did you came to make electronic music?
I’m into music for quite long now, it was something very important for me since my early childhood, and i have always wanted to be involved in it somehow. Let’s say everything started when I began with my drum lessons, a friend of my brother from his band gave me a whole Battery as a present (my brother is a guitar player). So I started playing with friends, you know, doing covers and things like that. Later on I picked the bass, which I continue today, in the middle of all that, when i wad around 16, I started going to clubs and getting in touch with House and Techno, you can guess how that ended…
How did you meet your first label?
Well I was very lucky with that, I was a client in Alex Under’s record shop in Madrid, and I became a good friend, he had the studio in the basement of the shop, so I started showing him my tracks, Tadeo was also around there, as well as Jose Villalobos and some other guys, that’s how our net28 project and all that labels started. I started releasing very fast, and had always a lot of support, I guess I evolved and learned while I was putting out my music on the street.
What about your first club experiences as a DJ ?
It all came from the productions, I was never a Dj in my town or something like that, I did parties with friends and stuff like that, but never like a serious residency, so I started going out for playing because of the music I was doing. I think the first “serious” gig I had was in Watergate, around 2005, which was very cool
What do you want to tell us through your music?
That’s very difficult to say, it is very important for me to feel that what I’m putting out has personality and it’s saying something, I really need to feel that every track I do has something to it, and that is sometimes very hard to achieve. My hard drive is full of music that sounds empty or anodyne to me, yet it could be worth for a dancefloor, I can’t put that out, I need to feel is mine. But to tell you what I want to express, that’s not easy, is more like a feeling or a state of mind, and it really depends on each moment I passing thru, I guess I just try to express myself and get out of me all that I want to express, In this particular moment I’m truly confident about my skills and my music language and knowledge, and I’m very happy with the way of composing I developed over the years, so I can concentrate more precisely on what I want to achieve on every track, that has being said a lot of times, but i can’t agree more, you have to learn the language and the skills, and then that has to become a part of you. It is a very encouraging task that I love to get into, learning and evolving into new things everyday. It truly is the main thing in my life, or at least what enjoy the most.
What are your main influences?
I have a lot! I do love Miles Davis, but lately I do feel Coltrane has a bigger influence in me, as he completely put his technique to serve his feelings and search inside him for what he wanted to express, I do love Gemini, a lot, i never stop amazing myself about what he did, I love Autechre, the Motown, Sly, Mika Vainio, Bobby Konders, I really die for almost everything that came out of NY and Chicago from late 80s to mid 90s, and I do love Juan Atkins. I miss that old school feeling, when it wasn’t about house or techno, but about music.
Is there a particular artist that you would like to work with?
Not really right now, I mean there are lots, but it’s something I can’t imagine, it is so difficult for 2 artists to fit on each other moods and ideas…
What was your favorite release this year?
I guess Transformacion in my own imprimpt AHD, from my long time friend DJ F, it’s an incredible release. Joey Anderson one on deconstruct was amazing too, but I think that’s 2012, there are many amazing records being release lately though
What are your next projects (if they’re not secret)?
No secrets here! There’s another EP as epiphany in my label AHD coming out soon, right after the one from Fred P which will be out in about a month. There is another release in Lovemonk records that is supposedly going to be released this week, a track to be released in the next Nonnative VA comp. by Semantica, but I’m not sure when will that be released. Plus I’m working on many new things I still need to find a place for, I guess something for Oslo too
Can you tell us about your studio?
Of course, I don’t keep any secrets about it. The center of the studio is the mixer, a Soundtracs Solo Logic, which puts together all the equipment, analogue or the computer, I mix the tracks on it and use the computer as another hardware piece, I do have an MPC which I use for drum and samples, a TR-808, a Waldorf Microwave 1st edition (the one with the analogue filter) an Emax sampler, a Roland JX8P, a x0xb0x that I build myself, serial number 45 actually 🙂 a Sony DPS V77 multieffect and an eventide time factor, a Mac Pro running cubase, Numerology and omnisphere as the only soft synth I actually use. I do have a tape machine, telefunken M15A, and I will buy an Elektron analog four as soon as possible, loved it. Some huge PMC Speakers (too big maybe)… That’s all I think ahh! And one of those small MFB drum computer, they’re dope! The one with the blue led display
What are the three clubs in which you would like to play?
There are a lot! I’ve been lucky enough to play in lots of cool places, for sure there are some I’d love to go and didn’t (yet i hope) I heard great things about Concrete, I’d love to go back to R Johnson, it’s very long since the last time, I don’t know…
