Deux mois après avoir invité Blond:ish pour fêter nos 6 000 fans, on revient cette fois-ci avec Smash TV, autre duo de DJ’s signé chez Get Physical. Auteur de production pour entre autres Ellen Allien, Axel Boman et Miss Kittin, le duo a sorti son premier album « Noise & Girls » il y a quelques mois.

Salut Holger, Salut Kai ! Merci encore de fêter ces 7000 fans avec nous avec ce mix exclusif. Pour commencer à vous présenter à nos lecteurs on devrait peut-être commencer par expliquer ce qui se cache derrière votre pseudo « Smash TV »
Salut à vous et merci pour l’invitation ! Que ça soit clair, ça n’a aucun rapport avec le jeu vidéo sorti dans les années 80’s. Je dirais plus que c’est dû à une certain addiction aux mauvaises émissions TV 😉
Comment pourriez vous définir votre genre ? Quelles sont styles qui vous ont le plus influencé ?
On fait en sorte que notre procédé de production soit le plus analogue possible, que ça soit pour les boîtes à rythmes ou les synthés – on n’enregistre pas sur cassette ! On ne se catégorise pas vraiment dans un style c’est à vous de décider. Nos principales influences viennent de notre environnement, de l’expérience acquise lors des tournées, auprès des gens. Avec le temps on a développé une capacité à s’exprimer à travers la musique et à mettre en note nos influences. «Noise & Girls » résume assez bien notre année 2012, du titre au dernier morceau.
Ca fait quelques mois que vous avez sorti votre album «Noise & Girls». Que pourriez vous nous dire sur les retours que vous avez reçu ?
On a reçu de supers retours d’artistes comme Pan Pot, Paco Osuna, Tiefschwarz, DJ T, Steve Rachmad, Wally Lopez, Martin Landsky, Rodriguez JR, Kiki, Alex Niggemann, Martin Eyerer et bien d’autres. Ca nous a fait vraiment plaisir de voir tout ce soutien
Vous faites parti de la famille Get Physical depuis trois ans, comment s’est fait votre rencontre avec le label ?
C’est un peu arrivé par hasard. Patrick et Philipp de M.A.N.D.Y. nous ont invité à une de leurs soirées au Watergate pile au moment où on prenait une nouvelle direction musicale avec Smash TV. Ils cherchaient des sons nouveaux, on en avait, donc on peut dire qu’on est bien tombés ! Get Physical c’est comme une famille et nous on est les cousins étranges qui se pointent toujours avec des habits bizarres et souvent un peu trop bourrés haha
L’été vient enfin d’arriver et votre planning à l’air plutôt chargé. Y a t-il une date que vous attendez plus que les autres ?
Il y en a quelques unes qu’on attend en particulier, notamment notre première venue au Melt! Festival ce week-end, puis des festivals à Montréal, Barcelone, en Italie en Août, puis à Zurich, en Belgique etc.. Ensuite on retourne aux Etats-Unis, au Mexique pendant l’automne. On réfléchit en ce moment même à faire une tournée au Brésil en septembre, à retourner en Asie à la fin de l’année, on a plein de projets bien cools qui arrivent
En parlant de vos concerts, on a vu que vous étiez venu l’an dernier à Paris. Comment s’est passé votre rencontre avec le public français ? Avez-vous prévu de revenir par ici ?
Cette année aussi on était en France ! On a fait le Marvellous Festival à Paris en mai dernier 🙂 Il semble qu’on va encore revenir pour des dates sur Paris et Bordeaux. Les gens savent faire la fête en France, il n’y a pas une fois où on termine la soirée sans avoir des bons souvenirs et un gros manque de sommeil ! Plus sérieusement, notre musique nous a toujours permis de nous faire de bons amis en France et on a hâte de revenir !
Chez Beyeah on parle aussi de Hip Hop et on a cru comprendre que vous appréciez les sons de DJ Premier. Donnez nous votre top 5 de DJ Premier

Je vous conseillerai aussi de jeter un oeil sur ce ce que fait Florian Kaltstrom, c’est un ami à nous qui vient de Vienne et qui apporte une touche Rock & Roll dans ce genre de musique

Hello Holger, Hello Kai! We are really happy to have this Smash TV’s exclusive mix! We should first begin to introduce you to our readers with the meaning behind Smash TV’s name
Hello ! Thanks for having us ! First of all, it’s fot nothing to do with the 80’s Arcade game. It might have come up a long time ago due to a certain persons addiction to crap television 😉

How would you describe your style of music? What are your main influences in electronic music?
We keep the production process as analogue as possible, from drum machines and synths, through anaologue fx to an analogue tube mixing desk – we don’t record on tape though ! This makes our sound, stylewise it’s something we don’t really think about, you have to decide for yourself. Main influences are actually the experiences on the road with the people, the situations we get in, the atmospheres.. Over the years we developed the ability to express ourselves musically as we want to, and now it’s about channeling those influences into music. «Noise & Girls» sums up what was going on in 2012 for us, from the title to the last track.
It’s now been a few months since your Noise & Girls album was released on Get Physical. What could you tell us about the feedbacks you received on that release?
We got great feedbacks by Pan Pot, Paco Osuna, Tiefschwarz, Dj. T, Steve Rachmad, Wally Lopez, Martin Landsky, Rodriguez Jr., Martin Landsky, Kiki, Alex Niggemann, Martin Eyerer to name a few, we’re very happy about this support.
You are a part of the Get Physical family since three years, how did you first get in touch with the label?
It was a coincidence: Patrick and Philipp invited us to their M.A.N.D.Y. & friends night at watergate to party with them, just as we were giving Smash TV a new direction. they were looking for new music, we had some, got along good… 🙂
Get Physical is like a family, and we are the weird cousins that always show up in inappropriate wardrobe and get too drunk… haha…
Summer is finally here and it seems like your schedule is pretty busy, is there any gigs you are particularly looking forward to?
There’s some highlights: we’re gonna have our debut at Melt! Festival this weekend, followed by Festivals in Montreal, Barcelona, Italy in August, Hive Club in zurich, Belgium… we’ll be back in the states and hopefully Mexico in Fall, we’re working on a Brasil tour for september, back to Asia at the end of the year… lots of great things coming
Talking about your gigs, last year you came to France, did you get a good vibe with the French crowd? Do you plan on coming back?
We were in France this year as well already!! Marvellous Island Festíval in Paris in May!! 🙂 and we’ll be back this year in Paris and Bordeaux as it looks! french people know how to Party, always send us home with an amazing vibe – and no sleep, haha! seriously, our music made us make good friends in France, can’t wait to come back!
At Beyeah, we also deal with hip hop and have read that you’re into DJ Premier’s music. What do you think are his 5 best productions so far?
Premo is still the man. him and Pete Rock are still an influence for what we do in a special way. five best productions… lets say our 5 favourite productions, ok? 😉
