Cette semaine on s’intéresse à Warm Up, une nuit Londonienne techno dont le chef de file s’appelle Aidan Doherty, DJ talentueux à qui l’on a posé quelques questions pour mieux comprendre pourquoi Warm Up est peut-être LA nuit dont la scène électronique londonienne avait besoin…
Pour commencer, est-ce que tu peux nous en dire plus sur toi et ton parcours: d’où viens-tu et quand est-ce que Warm Up a vu le jour ?
To start with, can you introduce yourself: where are you from? When did you start making music and what led you to create Warm Up?
J’ai grandi à Lancaster et j’ai posé mes valises à Londres à l’âge de 21 pour étudier les Beaux Arts à la Wimbledon School of Art. J’ai obtenu mon diplôme en 2008 et je suis devenu peintre à plein temps : j’ai été exposé et je vendais mes peintures, les choses allaient plutôt bien pour moi à vrai dire mais la musique à toujours été chère à mon cœur.
I grew up in Lancaster and moved to London when I was 21 to study fine art painting at Wimbledon School of Art. I graduated in 2008 and between then and 2013 I was a full time painter. I had a lot exciting exhibitions, sold some work etc, it was all going pretty well for me as an artist, but music was always a little bit closer to my heart.
J’ai toujours écouté de la musique électronique mais entendre un jour le remix de « The sky was pink » de Nathan Fake par James Holden fut un tournant majeur. Découvrir ce titre à ouvert la voie sur laquelle je me trouve actuellement. J’ai décidé à cette époque d’essayer de créer un mix de certains de mes morceaux alors j’ai téléchargé Virtual DJ (je sais !!!) et mon premier set d’une heure était né. Après ça je suis devenu complétement accro : j’ai fait de plus en plus de mixes, je suis passé sur Traktor, j’ai acheté des contrôleurs (Allen & Heath k2 et Traktor x1) et je m’y suis mis sérieusement. Depuis un an je n’utilise plus que CDJ.
I’ve always listened to electronic music, but it really grabbed my attention when I first heard James Holden’s Remix of Nathan Fakes “The Sky was Pink”, this track sent me on a journey that has never ended to this day. It was then when I decided that I wanted to try and put a selection of my tracks together into a mix, so I downloaded Virtual DJ (lol I know!) and made a one hour set. After this I was totally hooked, I made more mixes, upgraded to traktor, bought some controllers (Allen & Heath k2 & the Traktor x1) and got my head down. I’m now only using cdjs. I moved over to cdjs in 2014 and have never used Traktor since.
Quand j’ai gagné en assurance j’ai commencé à poster mes mixes sur Soundcloud et le feedback était super positif. J’avais vraiment envie de jouer devant un public alors j’ai décidé de créer mon propre événement pour y jouer ce que je voulais. Je savais qu’il n’y avait pas de soirée à Londres qui soit en phase avec la musique que je voulais jouer. Un jour j’ai réservé un bar dans le West End et avec deux amis on a organisé notre première soirée qu’on a appelé « Warm Up Match Bar » et c’est comme ça que tout a commencé. ‘
Once I got to the stage were I felt confident in my in djing I started to post my mixes on soundcloud and they seemed to get some great feedback. I was itching to play out so I decided to just create my own night were I could play what I wanted. I knew there were no nights out there in London that would accommodate the style of music I love so I thought why not start my own project. I booked a little bar in the west end, got two mates together and we held a night and called it “Warm Up Match Bar” and that was how it started.
Le but de Warm Up c’est d’être la plateforme où célébrer la musique que j’aime par les artistes que j’admire. Je pense qu’on est le seul projet à Londres qui s’intéresse vraiment à la techno mélodique et à l’électronica. C’est génial parce qu’on a construit un groupe de fidèles vraiment passionnés. Warm Up, c’est une communauté à l’esprit familial.
Warm Up’s sole purpose is to be a platform for the celebration of the music I love by the artists I admire. I think we are currently the only project in London specifically focusing on melodic techno and electronica. It’s nice because we have built a really passionate following of like-minded music lovers, our project is very much about a family kind of community.

About Warm Up: how many people are involved in the project?
Warm Up, c’est moi en fait: pas d’investisseurs, pas de partenaires…juste moi. J’ai beaucoup d’amis proches qui font maintenant partie intégrante du développement du projet en aidant comme ils le peuvent. Par exemple ma petite amie Amy s’occupe de tout ce qui est visuel et je trouve qu’elle fait un travail génial. J’ai aussi une super équipe de DJs résidents qui comprennent complètement la direction musicale dans laquelle j’avance. La team de DJs comprend Jorge Martins, Candi Bianca et Gus Emmet. J’ai aussi rencontré des artistes locaux très talentueux qui sont très proches de nous : Chris Davis, Luke Warren et Bade Records. Je rencontre constamment de nouveaux talents qui n’ont pas encore trouvé leur maison musicale à Londres.
It’s actually just me who runs Warm Up, no partners, no investors, just me. I have lots of close friends who have become part of the development and growth of Warm Up by offering their support in ways that they can. For example my girlfriend Amy is responsible for all visual aspects of the project which I think she does a great job on. I also have a great team of resident DJs who really understand the music policy I’m aiming for. They are Jorge Martins, Candi Bianca and Gus Emmet. I have also met some other very talented local artists who I would say are connected to us in a close way, those being Chris Davis, Luke Warren, Bade Records. I’m always meeting new enthusiastic talent that has not yet found a musical home yet in London.

Could you describe the spirit of Warm Up’s nights for us?
Je décrirais Warm Up comme une initiative honnête, fun, accueillante, parfois intense et parfois rêveuse et unique en son genre. Chaque évènement que nous avons organisé à été mémorable car Warm Up est un projet purement axé sur la musique…je suis plus créatif que business. Chez nous il n’y a pas de m’as-tu-vu, les gens viennent pour découvrir la musique d’artistes qu’on voit rarement à Londres. Ce qui est génial c’est qu’on a des réguliers maintenant et tout la monde à l’air de se connaître. Il y a un vrai esprit de communauté (les réguliers se reconnaitrons !).
I would describe the spirit of our nights as honest, lots of fun, extremely welcoming, intense at times, dreamy at times, and special in a unique way. Every event that we have held has always been a memorable one, that’s down to the the fact that Warm Up is a project purely focused on the music. I’m not really a business head, but more a creative thinker. There is never any attitude at our events, people are there to embrace the music from artists that London doesn’t really get to see. It’s nice because we have a really solid group of regulars now and everyone seem to know each other and it feels like a really warm, close nit community vibe. You lot all know who you are 😉

Qu’est-ce que tu penses de l’était actuel de la scène électronique à Londres ? Comment est-ce que Warm Up fera la différence ?
What do you think about the current state of the electronic music scene in London? How would you like Warm Up to stand out?
Il y a des promoteurs de talents à Londres qui créent des évènements uniques comme Avant Garde, Percolate, We Concur mais de manière générale les grosses nuits londoniennes attirent une foule d’imbéciles qui ne savent même pas qui ils viennent voir jouer. Ils sont tous la être vus. Je ne peux pas dire que je sois un grand fan de ce genre de nuit, la musique m’importe plus que tout. Je suis récemment parti en plein milieu d’un set de Tale of Us parce que la foule était trop agressive et ça a ruiné l’expérience pour moi. Il y a vraiment trop d’agressivité en ce moment…pas dans le sens physique, c’est plutôt une attitude que certains peuvent avoir en soirée.
There are some amazing promotors out there doing some very special events such as Avant Garde, Percolate, We Concur, but in general most big events in London seem to attract a lot of arseholes who have no idea who is even djing, they’re just there for the ‘scene’. I’m not in to this kind of vibe personally, for me the music is the most important thing. I recently left A Tale of Us set purely because of the intimidating crowd making the experience hell for me, there seems to be lots of aggression around, but don’t mean aggression in terms of physical violence but more the intimidating attitude of some people.
Lors des soirées Warm Up, c’est évident que les gens ne sont pas la pour être vus. C’est sans prétention. Les gens viennent pour l’expérience. Je sais que ca peut paraitre prétentieux mais je crois vraiment qu’on attire une foule plus éduquée musicalement que la plupart des autres nuits londoniennes et j’en suis extrêmement fier.
If you come to a Warm Up event you will see all walks of like, it’s very apparent that people are there to enjoy the artists, there’s no pretence – they come for the musical experience. I know it sounds snobby but I think personally that we attract a more musically educated crowd to most other nights out there and that’s something I’m proud of.
Mon approche de la promotion est un peu différente car je ne travaille qu’avec des artistes dont je crois en la musique. Ca veut dire que oui, on ne va pas devenir riche avec nos soirées mais je ne commencerais pas à booker des artistes juste parce qu’il ou elle peut fait vendre des tickets. Ce n’ estpas du tout la façon dont je vois les choses.
My angle towards promotion is slightly different to most as I purely book artists because I believe in their music, and yes this can mean we are not on to make lots of money etc but I would never book an artist solely because he or she are very good at pulling in crowds and selling tickets, that’s not what it’s about for me.

On vient de faire une soirée incroyable avec Dominik Eulberg et Nick Dow, c’était une nuit de dingue, la musique était hallucinante ! Le prochain show sera plus intime : on recoit Gidge le 1er Mai au même endroit où on a fait jouer Fairmont. On a vendu tous les tickets.
Well we just recently had our fantastic event with Dominik Eulberg & Nick Dow, it was an immense night and the music was out of this world! After this we are doing a super intimate show on the 1st May with Gidge at the same basement we used for Fairmont. That’s now sold out.
Je prépare notre 2e anniversaire dont la date officielle est début Juillet. Je suis super impatient à l’idée de retourner dans la forêt où on était l’an dernier pour une fête gratuite. C’était vraiment unique. On devrait fixer une date le 1er weekend de Mai où les températures le permettrons.
Im currently in the planning stage of our 2nd birthday, this will be early July. For me the most exciting thing this year will be to get back in the forest where we will do a free party. We did it at the end of last summer, it was truly epic. So I will be looking at the first hot weekend in May for that 😉

En ce moment j’écoute Luc Angenehm, la musique de Dave DK est aussi superbe. J’ai aussi écouté un producteur underground qui s’appelle A_ldric et on peut souvent entendre la musique de Luftschloss sortir de mes enceintes. Sid Le Rock fait aussi de la musique super dreamy en ce moment!
Im really digging Luc Angenehm at the moment, Dave Dk is also making superb music. I’ve been listening to an underground producer called A_Idric, and the music of Luftschloss is always coming out of my speakers. Sid Le Rock is also making some damn dreamy stuff right now!
